A couple of days ago we were contacted by a heating maintenance company in the Netherlands. They experience failures and feel that their service engineer response time, so also the customer down-time, could be reduced drastically. Currently their customers, which are mostly organizations that exploit office buildings, give them a call when they notice that their heaters aren’t working. This support item is then planned in manually, which is an inefficient process, and the nearest or available service engineer is directed there. The time that is lost between the failure and the fix by the service engineer is too long and gives their customers a very negative experience.
Of course, both the maintenance company and their customers know that machines will eventually stop working. That is inevitable. But there is an opportunity here for all maintenance companies to turn these scenarios into positive experiences for their customers. Even the slightest increase in efficiency is a win compared to how many service companies currently work. If a customer calls, it is already so much better to answer “we are aware of it, a service engineer is on its way” than starting the support planning procedure during that call. Even better would be when the service engineer just shows up right before the machine breaks down. Their customers will love them for that.
In this day and age that last scenario becomes very much possible. This is what is meant by Predictive Maintenance and is, in our eyes, one of the goals of the Internet of Things. Step one is to start listening to your things and you do that by for instance equipping it with sensors.
Now in this case, as a first quick test, we equipped a heating system with a temperature sensor. In the video below you can see how Cyril and I go to the test site to place the sensor.
We are showing you this because we want you to know how quickly we can do tests and show results with BuzzerBase. There is a lot of noise about the Internet of Things and its potential, but our approach is a little different. We are going to show you with simple, practical examples what is possible with IoT and what it takes.
